How removal actually works
Small lesions are removed under local anaesthetic with cautery or a fine laser, which takes minutes. A scab forms and lifts within a week or two. Warts are viral and often need more than one session, because the virus sits in the surrounding skin as well. Tattoos come off with the Pico laser over a course of sessions rather than in one go.
Why it matters
Skin tags and moles get removed at home with thread, at salons with a cautery pen, and in one case we saw, with a household chemical. Most of the time the lesion was harmless and the only cost is a scar that did not need to exist. Occasionally it was not harmless, and the chance to catch it early was burned off and thrown away. The examination before the removal is the part that matters, and it is the part only a doctor can do.
